Drills for soccer

Don’t you just hate it when undertaking drills for soccer, your players are not able to head the ball properly? Heading the ball is an important skill that aids the players in controlling and maneuvering the ball when it’s still afloat.

Many a times during the match, it is required to pass the ball by way of throwing it above ground. If the players are able to take the possession of the ball using their head, it shall ensure that the team has control of the ball for a maximum number of times.

There are some soccer drills that have the single objective of developing player’s heading skills. Let’s discuss a few of those:

The players must be divided in groups of 2 to 3 players maximum, prior to starting with these drills.

Soccer Drills

Heading volleyball: This is a perfect technique to learn to head the ball. In such drills for soccer, two players can perform it easily against each other. It’s similar to playing volleyball apart from that here players flip the ball over the other side of the net by using their heads in place of hands. Though, hands can be used to serve the ball.

The teams score depending on how many times they have successfully headed the ball over the net. You can make use of badminton net for this.

Juggling: Like in the previous drill, this too can be performed with 2 players or just one. In case of a single player, he or she can juggle the ball with their forehead. This is the time to pull up your socks, toss the ball in air, and start practicing. It is but obvious that this drill is comparatively tougher and the player gets better at it by practicing.

If there are two players, they can throw the ball in the air and head the ball back and forth to each other. The player who does not let the ball get down emerges the winner.

When you throw the ball, keep 2 players standing apart by 10 feet. Toss the ball at them randomly and ask them to head the ball back to you. Instruct them to jump as soon as they are ready to hit the ball. In this fashion, they learn faster.

Beware that they are instructed to use their forehead or side of the heads. If they do not follow your advice, they can get injured or have headaches.

This soccer practice is utilized best by the player bringing their forehead in line with the approaching ball. Then they jump and hit so that the ball gets height and momentum.

Soccer Field Diagram

When was the last time you used a soccer field diagram to explain soccer formations to the team? If yours answer is “long time back” or “never”, it means that your team does not know much about positions and formations.

A majority of coaches believe that by just giving oral instructions to the kids, they’ll know everything and this is where they go wrong. Formations on the field are an important subject and you should always discuss it with the players in advance.

The soccer positions of the players in every area from the defensive line are depicted in these by way of strategic choices made generally in terms of numbers. These formations should not be rigid and the coach should keep rotating the players during a game. Make sure that you finalize the formations only after keeping in mind the strengths and weaknesses of every player as it’s very significant.

Following are some of the common formations used in soccer:

Soccer Formations

4-4-2: This is the most commonly used. By 4-4-2 it means, four defenders, four midfielders, and two players in the attacking position without a goalkeeper.

In this formation, midfielders play the most important role in form of supporting the forwarders through defense. At the time of attack, they should move towards the goal line to support the defenders.

4-5-1: This is called a defensive formation with one forward and five mid-fielders. The biggest benefit with this kind of formation is that because the midfielders are all focused in the center, the opposition cannot attack easily.

And then because there is only 1 forward, it makes the midfielders go forward which frustrates the opposition to get the possession of the ball.

3-5-2: This formation has three defenders, five midfielders, and two forwards. This formation makes attacking as well as defending easy as 2 wingmen take up the attacking role and the center midfielder does not allow counter attacks from the opposition.

3-4-3: This is the most dynamic and aggressive formation on the soccer field diagram that is used by the team when it expects its opponents to play safe or defensive. With the aid of three defenders, four midfielders and three forwards, the plan of action is to attack using the forwards and use the defenders in the event of the opposition tearing apart the defensive line.

You cannot adopt a particular plan for the entire match. It must be flexible enough to change with the situation in the game. So a coach should employ the strategy of rotating the players as and when required. Even though, any formation can be in an offensive or defensive form.

Efficient soccer tactics regarding formations are crucial as a team’s win or lose depends on it. As the game becomes more action oriented, it should bring about more changes in the soccer formation plans.

Soccer drills

Lend me your ears even though you may differ with me on this. When it comes to soccer drills, it is important that kids are first trained on the basic skills of the game so that they can get a feel of the game. The soccer training we talked about must happen first before starting with teaching them the more difficult parts or the best way of playing the game.

Being a soccer coach, it’s your duty to see that the players kick off on the right note. So teach them all the essential soccer skills that form the basis of the game. Following are a few basic skills that each budding player must be skilled at.

Coaching the players to dribble and shoot the ball: Shooting and dribbling are the two most basic soccer skills to master. In order to be successful in the game, these skills play a defining role. However, you must arrange for teaching these soccer exercises before hand.

Starting from one end of the field put more than a few players over the field and line up all players in a straight line.

After that indicate the players to kick off. Running around the field, they would try to grab the ball by their feet as they dribble and shoot the ball in the goal located at the opposite end of the field. The players will improve on these two soccer drills soon after they continue practicing it on a regular basis.

Soccer drills

Passing the ball and following directions: Players learn the importance of team spirit as a result of these two soccer skills. After all, soccer is a team game and it should be evenly dispersed between all the players. They can never learn to play as a team if they do not possess good passing skills, and do not know how to follow simple directions.

In order to teach them first rate passing skills and help them follow directions, there is an easy exercise. At the start, the entire team should form a single line at either end of the field. At a distance of about 5-10 feet, any one player in the team should stand in front of that line.

As soon as you tell them to start, the first player in the line will endeavor to grab the ball from remaining team mates on field. When they are told to stop, the one with the ball should pass it on to the first player in the line. This is a soccer practice that has the potential to teach the players the ability to listen and follow directions.

Handling the Ball: It’s for you to teach your team members the ability to maneuver the ball in the field by using their feet along with other parts of body. This will result in players being more natural in their performance on the field. The players can improve on this by practicing the use of heads and knees to throw the ball and stopping the using the back.

Soccer conditioning

It’s not surprising to know that it’s soccer conditioning which serves as a platform for the success of any team. Soccer exercises build strength, agility, and endurance without which players cannot even think of being in shape for a live match, forget about winning it.

However, there may be situations when you and your team do not get enough days to train before a tournament. It does not mean that you must cut down on conditioning exercises. You don’t wish to see your players getting hurt prior to the match or at some point in the game.

If a soccer fitness training series is devised correctly, even 3 days time would be sufficient to train the players fully. All that it takes is seriousness, good preparation, and its implementation. Here are a few tips to work with short but effective conditioning programs.

Warming up: Tell the players to kick off with any of these; a five minute jog, heel flicks, high knees, or jumping. Take time to relax for a while in between. Then do a few stretching exercises for about 5 minutes to tone up the muscles. Make it a point that these soccer workouts comprise of all the key muscle groups.

Soccer Fitness

Running: Some coaches make their players do continuous rounds of running. Although there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s advisable that players strictly do some soccer specific running only. It means that for about 30 minutes, they do a combination of running, jogging, walking, and sprinting in no set order.

This running at varying speeds builds stamina and also helps players control their body. Also, they do not get fatigued since a walk after a sprint balances things out.

Leave it to the individual players to decide what they want to do and when. If they want to do sprinting for a longer time but only limited jogging, even that is fine. As the players get fitter and their stamina increases, you can increase the duration of your soccer conditioning program by another 5 to 10 minutes.

Stretching: Persuade the players to do stretching exercises both after the training session as well as a match. Focus on the entire body but give special attention to hamstrings, groins, quads, calves and lower back. Ensure that the stretching positions are of longer durations than the warm-up sessions. Generally, 20 to 30 seconds is a good duration.

Ask the kids to rest completely a day before the match. This will allow the muscles to recover and also prevent the possibility of an injury. Also, use this time to discuss your plan with the team and encouraging them.

Discuss some funny things or joke so that they feel lighter.
