largemouth bass baits

Old School Bass Fishing Family Secrets

Soft plastics ar by far the most popular largemouth bass baits used by bass fisherman nationwide. Soft plastic large mouth bass lures are as close to natural bass baits that you can get. They look and feel like real largemouth bass food when bass hit your bait.

They can be rigged so the hook is imbedded in the plastic so you can fish dense cover, common when you are using Texas bass fishing rigs, or with what is know as a Carolina bass fishing rig, where the hook or hooks are exposed. Carolina large mouth bass fishing rigs are normally fished on a clean bottom, and used in thick cover because of the exposed hooks. The Carolina rig is very enticing to large mouth bass because of how the fishing rig is designed. A slip sinker is attached well up your fishing line and when lowered through the water the soft plastic fishing lure seems to almost float and flutter because it is dropping through the water much slower then the slip sinker which attracts the large month bass.

Another popular way to fish soft plastics is by using a small jig head. This methods of fishing for bass is intended for a very slow largemouth bass bait fishing presentation. Fishing with soft plastic fishing lures and a jig head works great for known largemouth bass habitat locations but is not a good fishing method if you intended to fish news bass fishing waters. Soft plastic bass baits work well in cold water so spring and early summer are the best time of the year to use them. We are going to describe in the last three paragraphs how to make a Texas large mouth bass fishing rig, and a simple Carolina largemouth bass fishing rig.

To make a Texas bass fishing rig you will need the following fishing tackle. Start by pushing the thin tip end of a bullet sinker up your line first, then tie on a offset nightcrawler hook. Next push your soft plastic bass fishing bait on to your offset starting about 3/8” inch from the fat end of the soft plastic bait, and bring the hook out the side. Then twist the hook 180 degrees and push the hook back into the soft plastic bass bait deep enough to almost penetrate the other side but not pushing through.

To make a simple Carolina bass fish rig that has a strait hook you will need to start with the following fishing tackle. You will need a strait bass fishing hook, brass sinker, two way swivel, and a shinny bead. The brass sinker and the glass bead are used to create a “clinking” noise when falling through the water. This noise attracts the largemouth bass. Slide the brass sinker up the line with the pointed end going on first. Next slide the bead up the line., then tie the two way swivel on the line . Next tie on a 12” leader that already has a bass fishing hook attached on one end to the open eye of the two way swivel. Then push a soft plastic bass bait such as what is called aweenie worm about 3/8” from the top of the fat end of the soft plastic bass bait.

Bait fishing: article 84
the crappie is a very popular game fish that goes by a number of different names throughout the country such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouths. The name paper mouth is very fitting for the crappie. This nick name is very fitting of a crappie that is caught while bait fishing because there mouths are paper thin and the hook can pull out very easy so you need to be very careful to not over do it when you set the hook. This fact alone makes it very difficult to land a large speckled bass.

Both White and black crappie papermouth look very similar but there are a few different identification marks. Both white crappie and black crappie have dark – olive or golden or brownish backs. The white pole crappie look much lighter then the black crappie when caught while bait fishing. During the spawn it is hard to tell male white and black white perch apart because the male whit crappie will darken like the black crappie during the spawning period.

One easy way to tell the white calico bass from the black crappie is by counting the number of spines located at the dorsal fin. White  papermouth will have 5 to 7 spines, while  the black white perch will have 7 to 8 spines. The white white perch will have a have a shorter distance between the dorsal fin first spine to a point between the eyes, then the black speckled perch. The white speckled bass takes a more “s” or
hump shape then the black strawberry bass where the back rises from the head. The black speckled bass has a more round shape.

Both white speckled bass and black calico bass, are built for speed and maneuverability. They move in cover very easily because of their thin bodies. In cover you catch crappies while bait fishing fairly easy if you use the right crappie baits. The white crappie and the black speckled bass are not the only speices of crappie. For years white and black speckled perch have been cross breeding to make a very stable hybrid papermouth population. Also many hybrids have been raised in captivity for stocking. They have
been stocked in new habitat locations throughout the Untied States to create new pole crappie habitat areas.

Typically catfish thrive in food rich and fertile waters such as in eutrophic lakes that are not in their final stages of eutrophication. You can use the following lake aging process as a guideline to find productive channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish waters to go bait fishing in.

Oligotrophic Lakes: (stable young, infertile coldwater)

During the early stages of eutrophication there are no catfish present.During the midstage of eutrophication there are no catfish present. During the late stage of eutrophication there are no catfish present.

Mesotrophic Lakes: (mid-stage water changing from cold to warmer)

During the early stages of eutrophication there are no catfish present.During the midstage of eutrophication there could be some stocked channel catfish present.During the late stage of eutrophication channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish start to thrive.

Eutrophic Lakes: (Late stage lakes have changed to warm water )

During the early stages of eutrophication ideal for channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish to thrive. During the midstage of eutrophication channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish are still thriving. During the late stage of eutrophication channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish could still thrive under certain conditions.

From the chart above you can eliminate a lot of of fishing waters if you are targeting just channel catfish, blue catfish, and flathead catfish. Catfish will thrive in mesotrophic lakes in their final stages of their aging process and eutrophic lakes in all stages of aging. The main reason catfish thrive in mesotrophic, and eutrophic lakes is because of the much warmer water temperatures. All catfish need water temperatures of 75 degrees to spawn and the water in oligotrophic lakes all aging stages, and mesotrophic lakes in the early stages of the aging process have water temperatures way below what is needed for catfish to thrive and reproduce.

gizzard shad bait

No Exit Popup Old School Catfish Course Link

Shallow lakes and reservoirs often have featureless basins and shallow shorelines. You can catch channel catfish by drift fishing the large basins using cut baits such as gizzard shad, creek chubs, and shiners as you catfish bait selection. A good bait fishing catfish rig for drift fishing would be a three way swivel rig. Use a sinker large enough to stay on the bottom and a 5/0 to 7/0 hook.

To fish shallow reservoirs and lakes at night head to the shallow shorelines because bait fish will concentrate at night there. If you are fishing in a boat locate edge lines where soft pan bottom turns into sand or rock. Drop anchor here and cast your catfish bait towards the shore line. You can also attract channel catfish to your area by dropping a underwater fishing light and chumming the area. You can catch channel catfish while your bait fishing with a simple slip bobber rig, or by fishing tight line.

Cover edges in shallow water are also excellent areas to catch channel catfish because the channel cats are attracted to abundant numbers of bait fish such as shad , minnows moving in and out of the cover. They are also attracted to shallow flat areas adjacent to cover that are sandy and have a good population of mussels. These areas are extremely good under winding conditions. Use bait fish such as gizzard shad cut into pieces for your catfish bait. Or if you find a adjacent flat that has a population of mussels use the mussels as bait. You can also use soiled mussels by extracting the mussel meat and let it soak in sour milk for about two day prior to your fishing trip. Just a note, channel catfish love mussels so do not overlook them as a catfish bait.

If you are going to target roaming channel catfish on large featureless flats, try to fish with a three way swivel rig fishing rig, while drift fishing because your catfish bait will be suspended slightly off the bottom. Use live bait such as creek chubs or shiners, or cut bait such as gizzard shad as your catfish bait selection. Make sure your sinker selection is large enough that it constantly bumps bottom as you are drifting. To locate a good drift fishing starting point on these flats look for a slight look for points that have a slight depth change.
